Today my blog is not about business..... it is about a community helping one of our own....

My colleague Bill Jack of Club Wine Tours has a 5 year old daughter named Tianna that is very ill. He is looking to all of us to help him fundraise $50,000 so Tianna and her mother Donna can go out of the country for her much-needed treatment that is not available in North America. Please see the full story below.

The full story:
Tianna has been a little fighter all her young life. Born with three holes in her heart and limited hearing, she started her life by having to fight pneumonia. Her first month was spent in an oxygen tent, receiving daily ventilations and being tube fed. Little Tianna overcame these obstacles and grew to now have a perfect heart and full hearing, but the after-effects of the ventilations affected her such that she now has crackles and density in both lungs and a collapsed lung.

Tianna has exhausted all the local treatments available to her as well as been making regular visits to Vancouver Children's Hospital. Everyone has been wonderful to her, but she is simply not getting better. Her parents Bill and Donna Jack now have at least some hope of a possible cure- if she can get to the Czech Republic to receive it. ONLY YOU CAN HELP MAKE THIS MIRACLE HAPPEN BY YOUR WONDERFUL GENEROSITY!

Bill and Donna have recently found out about special treatments for children with illnesses such as Tianna has and they have been told that they have an over 70% chance of total cure. There is no guarantee, but with your help, little Tianna can at least have a chance!

Her parents need $50,000 to help cover the expense of the treatments, plus flights and accommodations for both Tianna and her mom Donna. The family has been told that an 8-week treatment may give her the miracle she needs.

Understanding Inventory Control

If you provide your customers with a product, you want that product to be available to them when they are looking to purchase it and you want enough on hand to be able to service all of your Kelowna and Okanagan customers – new and existing.

The ideal is to have enough on hand but not so much that it is costing you to store a large amount of excess inventory.

It is extremely important to keep track of the inventory you have on hand, plan for your future needs and ensure that what you have on the shelves matches what is recorded in your inventory system.

Inventory tracking is the following of inventory from the purchase stage through the usage or sale stage.

Inventory planning is the process of monitoring and recording of materials, supplies, & finished goods to ensure the right amount of each item is in stock when needed. Planning determines the optimal inventory levels to meet customer needs while still minimizing carrying costs.

Inventory reconciliation is comparing the count numbers to the numbers on record after a count has been done and reconciling any differences that arise.

Understanding Product and Service Costing in Canada

Whether you produce a product or provide a service, knowing and understanding your costs is imperative to remaining profitable.

You may cruise along for months or years, thinking business is good and believing everything you do is contributing to your profit and then one day you will ask yourself “What happened? Why am I suddenly less profitable?”

To avoid this situation, it is best to get a handle on your costs today. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Product and service costing assists in the determination the true costs of your products and services. Knowing the true costs is important if you want to know which of your products or services are profitable.

Product and service costing is the process of setting realistic cost standards for all products produced or services provided. Standard costs are budgeted costs that identify the value of the resources used in a specified product or service.

Standard costs are usually based on prior years’ costs and discussions with managers regarding the expectancies for the next year. Standard costs usually include the allocation of material costs including freight, duty, and brokerage as well as labour costs and often overhead costs.

Standard costs reflect the effective and efficient use of resources. The process of standard costing gives a company the costs to use when budgeting and comparing to actual costs. This determines the extent to which expectations are realized. Variances that are significant are then analyzed.

Product and Service Costing is an important function that needs to be performed. This step ensures your understanding of the costs incurred, and how those costs affect the profitability of your company.

Cost Effectiveness and its Importance

Do the benefits of providing a service or product outweigh the costs? How efficient is a particular process? Which is the most cost effective method of doing a job?

To stay competitive and profitable, all of these questions need to be asked and answered in the every-day running of your business.

Today, I would like to look at each of these 3 questions in a bit more detail:

1. Do the benefits of providing a service or product outweigh the costs?

Doing a cost-benefit analysis will answer this question. A cost-benefit analysis can be done on either an individual product basis or on a project basis.

Doing a cost-benefit analysis weighs the total expected costs against the total expected benefits and provides estimates of the costs and benefits PRIOR to implementing a service or producing a product.

The process may uncover unexpected costs as well. A cost-benefit analysis can help a company set priorities where resources are limited.

2. How efficient is a particular process?

Efficiency analysis is the process of analyzing how efficient a current process is and from this analysis determining areas where improvement or change may be necessary.

3. Which is the most cost effective method of doing a job?

Cost effectiveness analysis is the process of comparing resource allocation alternatives to assist in determining the most effective and/or least expensive way to produce something or attain a particular beneCost effectiveness analysis is also used to measure the financial cost of arriving at a specified outcome. If something is dubbed “cost effective” it is considered to be good value.

Cost effectiveness analysis supports objective decision making. It is often used wherever resources are limited.

Why Is Cost Accounting So Important?

There is more to accounting than accounting. Cost accounting is something a lot of business owners rarely think about.

I believe that if more companies had better cost accounting we wouldn’t have the issues we have in the downturn in the economy today. Businesses that understand cost accounting do well in these economic times and are more profitable than their competitors. Too often companies don’t realize they have a problem until it is too late to do something about it.

Cost accounting is a specialized branch of accounting, which involves classifications, accumulation, assignment and control of costs.

The use of cost accounting concepts and practices is required for a company to be successful. Cost accounting helps managers make better decisions by providing key information for planning and controlling. Cost accounting assists with measuring performance, determining costs & prices for goods or services, reducing costs, managing costs, and analyzing the benefits of an activity or process.

Companies need to measure their costs and then understand the behaviour of those costs over varying conditions such as changes in the volume of goods or services produced. Once this has been done, the costs can be assigned to the items produced or services provided and the profitability of each can be determined.

Tracy Wright is a Certified Management Accountant in Kelowna with eighteen years of experience in Management Accounting & Cost Accounting. Tracy also has a Business Administration diploma, a Major in Accounting ’with distinction’.

The first five years of Tracy’s career were in the truck manufacturing industry, where she performed numerous and various cost accounting functions, and was responsible for the analysis and forecasting of truck margins. The former ensures accuracy in option prices, and the latter ensures continued profit realization.

The next eleven years were spent working in Kelowna for one of Canada’s largest producers and distributors of craft beer, premium wines, and spirits with annual sales of approximately $40.0 million where she was responsible for all areas of cost accounting, as well as assisting with the management of inventory & contract packaging. She worked very closely with the production team in determining the standard cost of all products, as well as spearheading the production budget each year.

Since then, Tracy has been offering her specialized area of cost accounting skills to her clients as a consultant in Kelowna and the Okanagan.

At the present time, Tracy Wright is the only freelance cost accountant in the Okanagan Valley and believes that all businesses can benefit from some form of cost accounting. Tracy is passionate about cost accounting.

Tracy is also a Marketing Strategist for Drake Wellington, a company that helps people restructure their mortgage based on extremely efficient European lending styles. They allow a person to pay off their mortgage in as little as half the time, all the while making a portion of these payments qualify as tax deductions.
